Come And Join Us

We're always looking for volunteers to help with the service. If you can spare a little of your time then we would be pleased to welcome you to the group. We ask that all our members try to cover a minimum of 2 duties a month. We have three main roles within Midland Freewheelers - Fundraiser, Coordinator & Rider/Driver. Each role is described below.

To find out more about us why not come along to one of our monthly meetings (details further down the page) or click the Contact Us option to fill in our enquiry form.

Fundraiser

We are a charity and fundraising is the only way we can afford to provide our service to the NHS. Fundraising can be anything from standing outside a supermarket with some fellow volunteers raising money to organising sponsored events etc. Others get involved in talks to varying types of social groups, clubs and corporate presentations.

Coordinator

The Coordinator is a vital role without which the service cannot operate. The Coordinator receives the phone calls from hospitals / national blood transfusion service etc requesting us to provide transportation for anything from blood to medication to donated breast milk. The details are entered on the system and passed to the rider/driver. The equipment required for this is a smartphone. We use a web based app to record all jobs  we complete and the coordinator has responsibility for creating and monitoring the jobs

Rider / Driver

To be a rider or driver you need to be a minimum age of 25 years and possess an advanced riding/driving qualification through IAM, ROSPA (Silver minimum) or Emergency Services Blue Light.
Search online for IAM Roadsmart or RoSPA Advanced Riders and look for your local group and they will give you more info if you don’t already possess an advanced qualification.

Our fleet is made up of 5 BMW R1250RTs, 2 Yamaha FJR1300s, 3 BMW F800GTs, and 2 Skoda Octavia Scouts.

Monthly meeting

We have a monthly meeting where our volunteers get together to meet each other and discuss operational matters as well as hearing how we’re performing, particularly with our fundraising activities. We often have guest speakers such as sponsors, representatives from NHS organisations that we serve or our suppliers.

We meet on the first Friday of every month (except December) at Aldridge Wellbeing Centre, Leighswood Road, Aldridge, Walsall, WS9 8AB. The meetings start at 8pm (7:30pm for coffee and a chat first). Please feel free to come along. We can talk more there and you can see if you want to join us. Joining as a member is £25 for Riders/Drivers, £10 for others and then £10 per year thereafter. After joining you'll attend an induction training session so you know all about what we do, the processes and systems. It’s quite straight forward once you know how.
